Who deals with complaints about building work now?
The HIA says the former CBOS split on 1 October 2026. Building Standards Tasmania handles residential building disputes and Consumer Affairs Tasmania handles occupational licensing. Start with the business first.
Which trades do need a licence?
needatradie's Tasmanian guide says electrical, plumbing including roof drainage and gas fitting work need a licence whatever the job is worth. Look them up on the occupational licensing register.
Is my house heritage listed?
We cannot say. The City of Launceston keeps a Local Heritage Register and Heritage Tasmania keeps the state register. Hadspen is in a different council area, so ask Meander Valley Council there.
Do I need approval to repaint a heritage place?
The council says routine maintenance is usually exempt from the development application process. Heritage Tasmania says a place on the state register can need approval, and a minor works approval can be issued for painting. Ask before you choose a colour.
What does house painting cost in Launceston?
We have no Launceston prices. Yakka Labour gives $6,000 to $12,000 for a three-bedroom interior nationally and $6,000 to $11,500 for Hobart. The Quote Yard gives $4,500 to $9,000 for Tasmania. They are guides, not quotes.
How much does an exterior repaint cost?
Yakka Labour gives $3,500 to $8,000 for a single-storey brick veneer, $8,000 to $16,000 for a single-storey weatherboard and $16,000 to $32,000 for a two-storey weatherboard. The Quote Yard gives $5,000 to $12,000 for a single-storey exterior in Tasmania.
Should old paint be tested before sanding?
Yakka Labour says homes built before about 1970 may have lead-based paint and that a painter on an older home should test suspect paint and use lead-safe methods. Ask each business how it handles it.
Can asbestos ceilings or eaves be sanded?
Yakka Labour says painting over intact asbestos sheeting is generally fine but sanding, scraping or pressure washing it is not, and that some textured ceilings and fibro eaves in homes built before 1990 may contain it. If in doubt, get it tested.
Can any time of year be used for exterior painting?
Yakka Labour says paint should not go on exterior surfaces in rain, heavy dew, strong wind or extreme heat. The Bureau of Meteorology shows about 82 rain days a year at Launceston Airport and Wikipedia says winters are renowned for foggy mornings, so ask how damp mornings are handled.
Does painting a roof stop leaks?
Yakka Labour says paint does not fix leaks. It seals and protects the surface and changes the colour, and it will not hold a loose ridge cap or stop water through a cracked tile or a rusted valley.
How big can a deposit be?
We have no Tasmanian source for a limit, so ask Consumer Affairs Tasmania or Building Standards Tasmania. Yakka Labour tells you to be wary of a big deposit before the job starts.
Is my suburb covered?
Tell us your suburb in the form. Independent businesses choose where they work, so we cannot promise cover everywhere.
How long does it take to get quotes?
We cannot say. Independent businesses decide whether and when to reply, and we do not promise a response time.
