What the published prices say

Yakka Labour, whose guide we read on 31 October 2026, gives a full interior repaint with two coats on walls, ceilings, doors, frames and skirting at $3,500 to $6,500 for a two-bedroom unit or townhouse, $6,000 to $12,000 for a three-bedroom single-storey house and $8,000 to $15,000 for a four-bedroom single-storey house, including GST. It gives Hobart at $6,000 to $11,500 for the three-bedroom case. The Quote Yard, a lead-generation site, estimates $4,500 to $9,000 for a three-bedroom home in Tasmania, and $400 to $650 for a single room with walls and ceiling. None of these is a Launceston quote.

Prices by room and by surface

For one or two rooms, Yakka Labour says painters usually quote per room, with a standard bedroom at $500 to $1,100, a living room at $1,000 to $2,200, a kitchen at $600 to $1,300 and a bathroom at $450 to $900. Its area rates are $14 to $25 per square metre of wall, $12 to $22 per square metre of ceiling, $120 to $250 per door and $8 to $15 per metre of skirting board. It says walls only, without ceilings and trims, usually cost 40 to 55 per cent of a full figure, and that kitchens and bathrooms cost more per square metre than their size suggests because of the cutting in around fittings.

Furniture, colour and ceilings

Yakka Labour says many painters charge 10 to 20 per cent more for a furnished home because of the time spent moving and covering things, and that going from a dark colour to a light one can add 15 to 30 per cent. It says high ceilings, raked ceilings and stairwells need taller platforms or scaffolding, and that ornate cornices, picture rails and timber panelling take longer than flat plasterboard. Ask each business who moves the furniture, how floors and fittings are protected and what is assumed about colours.

Old paint and older ceilings

Yakka Labour says homes built before about 1970 may have lead-based paint in older layers, especially on trims, windows and doors, and that a painter working on an older home should test suspect paint and use lead-safe methods. It says some textured ceilings in homes built before 1990 may contain asbestos, and that sanding or scraping it is not. We give no handling instructions. If your home is older, ask what the business does before it sands anything and whether any testing is in the price.

Sheen and finish

Yakka Labour says flat or matt finishes hide imperfections but mark easily, low sheen is the standard for living areas and bedrooms because it wipes clean, semi-gloss suits kitchens, bathrooms and laundries and gloss or semi-gloss enamel is the usual choice for doors, frames and skirting. It says choosing the right sheen costs nothing extra. Ask the business to name the product and sheen for each surface, and to say whether bathrooms are getting a mould-resistant paint and a stain-blocking undercoat on ceilings with water stains.

Reducing the bill

Yakka Labour lists ways to cut the cost: empty the rooms, keep to one wall colour and one trim colour, skip the ceilings if they are fine, book in a quieter season and do careful patching preparation yourself. It says late autumn and winter are quieter for interiors in the southern states. It also says a sensible split for many households is to paint simple bedrooms yourself and pay a painter for ceilings, stairwells, trims, kitchens and bathrooms. If lead paint is possible, it says to leave sanding to a professional.

Questions to ask each business

  • Which rooms and surfaces are included, and which are not?
  • What preparation, patching and priming are included?
  • Which product, sheen and number of coats are quoted for walls, ceilings and trims?
  • Who moves the furniture, and how are floors protected?
  • How will old paint or old ceilings be dealt with?
  • Is the colour change in the price?
  • How long will it take, and when would it start?
  • What is the payment schedule, and what is the deposit?

Before you accept

Compare at least two written quotes for the same rooms and the same finish. Ask what experience and insurance the business can show you, and keep the quote, any agreement and the photographs. If you are replacing a ceiling, a switchboard or a light fitting as part of the job, ask who does that and look up any local trade on the public register, since needatradie says electrical and plumbing work need a licence.
