What the published prices say

Yakka Labour, whose guide we read on 31 October 2026, says exterior prices depend more on the wall material than on floor area. It gives a single-storey brick veneer home, where eaves, fascia, gutters, timber trims and doors are painted, at $3,500 to $8,000, a single-storey rendered home at $7,000 to $14,000 and a two-storey brick or rendered home at $10,000 to $22,000, all including GST. It gives painting rendered or weatherboard walls at about $15 to $30 per square metre for two coats with standard preparation. The Quote Yard, a lead-generation site, estimates $5,000 to $12,000 for a single-storey exterior in Tasmania and $8,000 to $18,000 for a two-storey one. Neither is a Launceston quote.

Preparation comes first

Yakka Labour says preparation is most of a good paint job. Washing, scraping, sanding, filling and spot-priming take longer than the painting on an older home, and a worked example in its guide spends $2,520 of an $11,345 total on washing, scraping, sanding and filling a weatherboard cottage before any top coat goes on. Ask each business what preparation is in the price, how bare timber and failed paint will be treated and whether rotten timber is excluded. A quote that says only two coats on the walls has not told you how the surface will be prepared.

Old paint and asbestos

Yakka Labour says homes built before about 1970 may have lead-based paint in older layers, especially on exterior weatherboards, windows and trims, and that scraping or sanding it creates toxic dust that is harmful to young children and pregnant women. It says a painter should test suspect paint and use lead-safe methods, and it says to ask how they handle it. It also says fibro eaves in homes built before 1990 may contain asbestos, and that sanding, scraping or pressure washing it is not fine. We give no handling instructions. Ask how each business would test, what it would do if it found something and whether that cost is in the price.

Working at height

Yakka Labour says exterior painting at height is a common source of falls and that professionals should use scaffolding, platforms or boom lifts for upper-storey work, not leaning ladders for long periods. It lists scaffolding or a lift as a cost on two-storey walls. Ask each business how the upper walls and the eaves would be reached, whether access equipment is included and what safety measures are in place. A very low price on a two-storey house may leave this out.

Heritage and colour

The City of Launceston keeps a Local Heritage Register, and says routine maintenance is usually exempt from the development application process. Heritage Tasmania says a place on the Tasmanian Heritage Register can need approval for works, that a minor works approval can be issued for painting, and that a repainting application should include notes on the existing finishes and full details of what is proposed. Wikipedia says Launceston is a major location of Federation style housing and has many Victorian and Georgian buildings. We cannot tell you whether your home is listed, so ask before you choose a bold change. The Quote Yard also says heritage properties usually attract premium pricing.

Weather and timing

Yakka Labour says a single-storey exterior takes one to three weeks depending on material and weather, and that paint should not go on exterior surfaces in rain, heavy dew, strong wind or extreme heat. The Bureau of Meteorology's Launceston Airport statistics show about 82 rain days a year, about 67 days with a minimum of 2 degrees or lower and about 31 days at or below zero. Wikipedia says Launceston winters are renowned for foggy mornings. Ask how the painter plans for damp mornings and cold nights, and how a delay would change the dates and the payment stages.

Questions to ask each business

  • Which surfaces are included, and which are excluded?
  • What preparation is included, and how will bare or failing timber be treated?
  • How will paint on an older home be tested and handled?
  • Which product, sheen and number of coats are quoted for each surface?
  • How will upper walls and eaves be reached, and is access equipment included?
  • Has the heritage status of the house been checked?
  • What happens if the weather delays the work?
  • What is the payment schedule, and what is the deposit?

Before you accept

Compare two written quotes for the same scope, check that each names the products and the coats, and ask what experience and insurance the business can show you. Keep the quote, any agreement, the photographs and your messages. If something goes wrong, start with the business, then Building Standards Tasmania or Consumer Affairs Tasmania.

How much does an exterior repaint cost?

Yakka Labour gives $3,500 to $8,000 for a single-storey brick veneer and $8,000 to $16,000 for a weatherboard. The Quote Yard gives $5,000 to $12,000 for a single-storey exterior in Tasmania. They are guides, not quotes.

Does an exterior repaint need a permit?

We cannot say. The council says routine maintenance is usually exempt, and Heritage Tasmania says a heritage-register place can need approval. Ask both for your address.

Is lead paint a concern?

Yakka Labour says homes built before about 1970 may have it. Ask how the business tests and handles it.

How long does an exterior repaint take?

Yakka Labour says one to three weeks for a single-storey home, depending on material and weather.

Can painting happen in wet weather?

Yakka Labour says paint should not go on exterior surfaces in rain, heavy dew, strong wind or extreme heat.
